Hey Facebook, Are you ready for Asia?

After Facebook’s 11 year anniversary, Facebook knows Asia is going to be its Biggest Market. Over 50% of what Facebook makes and come from outside US, which is around $6 billion dollars. The majority of its future growth will come from Asia’s powerhouse: India, Indonesia, Philippines and China.

A recent CNN article suggested that Facebook knows that majority of its business is in Asia. The future of its business lies in the eyes of the Asian consumers, who are eagerly waiting for a more assertive Facebook that will reach out to them more. Almost 1 billion people are in queue

People are ready here, and I’m exciting for us and we love Facebook.”- Mike from Philippines. Facebook has definitely become a powerhouse in the world of web. As Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, pushes for his company “Internet.Org” to bring internet and web infrastructure to these Asian countries and Africa, Facebook will definitely grow. Mark knows that they only way to make Facebook an all-time top global company in the history of the world, is to capture the Asian market.


Filipinos, Indonesians, Indian and Chinese people are loyal customers that love great products and service. Their loyalty and passion for the web have created a way for Facebook to grow their presence in those area.

The question now goes back to: “Is Facebook ready for Asia?”



Will BuzzFeed Fail?

I remember sitting in my work chair and getting a notification from my phone that said “Facebook is launching Instant Articles”. I sat in complete silence for a minute, then I took my laptop, went on a corner and opened my google homepage.

Confused to what Facebook Instant Articles was, I googled it twice, three times, again, then again, and again. I read every single article about Facebook instant articles. But I found no article was coming from BuzzFeed regarding Facebook Instant Articles. I then sat for another minute and thought to myself “Why is BuzzFeed so quiet?

BuzzFeed gets its 75% of total website visitors from social media outlets like Facebook. For example, you are on your Facebook homepage, then an article from BuzzFeed named “Leonardo DiCaprio Might Be A Human Puppy” pops up to your Facebook newsfeed. You then clicked this article, and this will lead you to BuzzFeed’s website. You just increased BuzzFeed’s number of visitors.

This is the BuzzFeed’s model. In short, you go to your social media homepage, you see their article, you will then click it, then you visit their site, then BuzzFeed’s traffic just went up. This is a powerful and brilliant tech media publishing strategy that made BuzzFeed worth 800 Million Dollars.

Facebook instant articles is a new service that Facebook launched that would not let Facebook users leave their Facebook pages once they click on a BuzzFeed article. This is going to affect BuzzFeed’s business model tremendously and will slow their traffic.

“BuzzFeed is really quiet”- I told myself. This time I expanded my google search by putting in “Facebook instant articles buzzfeed press blog”. I finally found an article about the Facebook Instant Articles named “Making Content For The Way People Consume Media Today” where Ashley McCollum, BuzzFeed Chief of Staff, talks about the change and its effect in today’s media. The article has 1 comment which is unlike BuzzFeed’s other pages.

Why is BuzzFeed so quiet about this change? Are the golden days over? Where will BuzzFeed website traffic come after Facebook implement this? What will be the next chapter for BuzzFeed? Will BuzzFeed Fail?



Story: Shine on Sierra Leone

Shine on Sierra Leone (SOSL) was founded in 2006.  In the African country of Sierra Leone, the innovative non-profit provided [1]:

  • High quality education to more than 2800 students
  • Microloans to 7000 women
  • Computer literacy training to 12000 people
  • Adult literacy training to 600 people
  • Health care program to 50000 mothers and children

The video tells the story of SOSL’s work since 2006, along with moving testimonials of children whose lives were transformed by SOSL.  The organization empowers the individual through personal development, as a tool to foster social transformations in Sierra Leone [1].  Instead of simply dumping money and aid to the people, SOSL believes in systematic long-term investment on individuals, so they can later become a force of  social transformation to move a country like Sierra Leone out of poverty.  It is up to the Sierra Leone people, not outside agencies, to transform their own country – outside agencies’ job is to facilitate the transformation process via quality education or other programs (e.g. Microloans) that could expand opportunities for the people of Sierra Leone.

What is Silicon Valley?

As a person who grew in the Valley, I get this “What is Silicon Valley?” question a lot from people. The typical answer I hear is Silicon Valley is the tech capital of world that companies like Apple, Google, Facebook and Cisco call home. Some will say that Steve Jobs grew up in the Valley and build the arguably most successful company in the world. Others will say that you will meet the smartest people in the world in the Valley. Some will say “I just don’t know”.

All are valid answers, but what really is Silicon Valley? Is it San Francisco? Is it San Jose? Is it where people go to create new wealth? What is Silicon Valley?

Before I go to the answer of the question, remember when Steve Jobs introduced the 1st Iphone; he looked at it as a combination of an Apple Ipod and a phone, but the most important feature of it was the Internet, which later expanded to Apple Apps.

steve jobs iphoneSilicon Valley is three things: hardware, software and internet. Every technology company in the Valley will either create one or a combination of those three. Iphone’s beautiful hardware and software are useless without the connectivity to internet.

Let’s stop for a second and think about the most famous companies in each of the area: Facebook-internet, Google-internet, Apple-hardware, software & internet, Oracle-software for business, Cisco-hardware, and Uber-Internet. These three things defines Silicon Valley; the real question is what will happen to those three things? Let’s try answering them below.


  1. The old boring hardware is out and the new is in!

Most people who are in the industry will consider hardware companies like Intel and Cisco the pillars of hardware technology. But there is a new kind of change in the Valley and it’s called hardware renaissance. The renaissance is happening right in front of you. Companies like Fitbit for fitness, Tesla for cars, SpaceX for space travel, Google autonomous car and Apple watch for Internet of things. These are the future and it’s only the start of more.

  1. The software of yesterday is getting a facelift!

Remember those days where you had either a floppy disk, a CD or even a USB flashstick to download your software and upload to your computer. Software companies like Salesforce for business marketing and Fire Eye for security is changing how we interact with them as most of them use new features like cloud software, cleaner design, and easy to use interface and internet download capability . Software will always be there and will need a drastic improvement as business users and regular consumers will demand for software that have smart algorithm, big data capabilities and all in one integrated system.

  1. The internet of tomorrow

This is the most important aspect of the Valley. The race for internet of tomorrow is changing every day. What is the next Uber? What is the next Facebook? As new hardware like virtual reality devices, Internet of things like Apple watch and google glass, or even as simple as no hardware at all will define how we interact with technology. Technologies will change and its purpose will do also. There will be new hardware, software, but the internet aspect of it will rule it because of its connectivity with the users.

Bay Area’s Best: Super Duper Burgers

Super Duper Burgers is originally from San Francisco, but now has a few other locations throughout the Bay Area.  There is a Super Duper Burgers location at San Jose’s Valley Fair Mall.  I tried their burgers, and it is literally 10X better than McDonald’s burgers!  If I rate 35 (out of 100) for McDonald’s, I would rate 95 (out of 100) for Super Duper Burgers ta reda på här!  Super Duper Burgers is a bit pricey, about $7 to $10 per burger.  But the quality makes up for the price, plus their burgers are much healthier for the company uses a lot of local organic ingredients to build their burgers.
